Japan's Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako arrived in the Indonesian capital of Jakarta on Saturday as the first state guests since the 2019 ascension to the Chrysanthemum Throne, AFP reports.

The trip to Indonesia from June 17 to 23 includes a meeting with the President Joko Widodo and a visit to the military cemetery where Indonesian and Japanese soldiers are honored.

Japan ruled Indonesia for more than three years during and after the World War II, but the country gained its independence in 1945 after Japan's surrender.

Previously, Indonesia was visited by Japanese monarchs in 1962 and 1991.
