Constitution Day is celebrated in Armenia on July 5. The main law of the country is already 28 years old.

On that day in 1995, the country's draft Constitution was submitted to a popular referendum. The opposition at that time considered the results of the referendum to be falsified. But according to official data, the Constitution was adopted. It was the first Constitution of independent Armenia.

Ten years later, on November 27, 2005, the country again held a constitutional referendum, during which the citizens approved the proposed amendments in Armenia’s main document. These amendments expanded the powers of the parliament. At the call of the opposition, however, most of the society boycotted this referendum on constitutional amendments. But officially the referendum was considered held and those amendments were adopted.

The Constitution of Armenia was amended in 2015, too. In particular, on December 6, 2015, a referendum on constitutional amendments was held, according to which Armenia transitioned to a parliamentary system of governance. Accordingly, there will no longer be presidential elections in Armenia by nationwide voting. After the transition to parliamentary government, the President of Armenia was elected by the National Assembly formed as a result of the 2017 parliamentary elections and the institute of electors.

According to the first and second articles of the Constitution of Armenia, the latter is a sovereign, democratic, social, legal state, and the power in Armenia belongs to its people.

According to the law on holidays and memorial days of Armenia, by the decision of July 24, 2001, July 5 is celebrated in the country as Constitution Day and declared non-working day.
