YEREVAN. - France should adopt a law prosecuting the denial of Armenian Genocide in case Turkey refuses to acknowledge its past, said French President Nikolas Sarkozy in Tsitsernakaberd Memorial of Armenian Genocide Victims on Thursday, AFP reports. Sarkozy arrived in Armenia on two days’ official visit.

Asked whether France should adopt a law prosecuting anyone who denies Armenian Genocide, Sarkozy replied that "if Turkey revisited its history, looked it in the face, with its shadows and highlights, this recognition of the genocide would be sufficient."

"But if Turkey will not do this, then without a doubt it would be necessary to go further," AFP quotes Sarkozy.

Armenian News-NEWS.am reported earlier that after his visit to the Memorial of Armenian Genocide Victims Nikolas Sarkozy stressed that collective denial is more threatening and dangerous then individual one. According to him, Turkey is a great state and should be able to face both bright and dark pages of its history directly.

“Turkey should act exactly the same way as Germany. States become stronger when they admit and recognize their history,” Sarkozy stated.
