YEREVAN. - In a statement issued over opposition Armenian National Congress (ANC) 24/7 rally the police says it will implement the powers granted by law in the event of excessive infringement of public order.

“The illegal rally held in the Liberty Square has been violating the public order for a considerable period already. The participants would not clear the square of their tents, ignoring the legitimate calls of the police and limiting the availability of the place for other people.

The illegal actions of the organizers and participants of the rally failed the decision of the Government Committee to hold the last farewell ceremony of people’s artist Vanush Khanamiryan in the building of Opera and Ballet Theatre. The efforts of police to negotiate with the protesters on the organization of the event came to naught.

Being tolerant and having adopted the policy of consistent negotiation with the organizers of the meeting, the police have so far refrained from implementing measures to suppress illegal practices, relying on the sanity of the organizers.

Simultaneously we reiterate our call to the organizers and participants of the illegal gathering that in the event of excessive violation of public order, the police will implement the powers granted to them by law,’’ reads the police statement.
