Republic of Armenia National Assembly (RA NA) speaker Alen Simonyan on Wednesday received the newly appointed Greek ambassador, Christos Sofianopoulos.

First, the NA speaker congratulated the ambassador on his appointment, wishing him successes during his tenure, the NA informs.

Simonyan noted with satisfaction about the strong friendly relations established between Armenia and Greece, which are based on the centuries-old brotherhood, mutual aid and common values of the Armenian and Greek peoples.

“The Armenian-Greek inter-state relations are at high level, meanwhile the inter-parliamentary cooperation has unrealized great potential. I consider necessary to boost the cooperation between our parliaments also in the format of mutual visits,” the NA speaker noted.

Also, Alen Simonyan highlighted the close collaboration of the representatives of the two parliaments in various international parliamentary organizations. The NA speaker lauded the cooperation with Greece within the framework of the EU-Armenia Comprehensive and Enhanced Partnership Agreement, as well as the Greek support to the NA by the Twinning Project.

The interlocutors touched also upon the trilateral format of Armenia-Greece-Cyprus cooperation.

In addition, reference was made to Armenia-EU relations, the existing security problems in the South Caucasus, particularly the humanitarian problems caused because of the ethnic cleansing committed against the Nagorno-Karabakh Armenians by Azerbaijan, and the process of Armenia-Azerbaijan negotiations in the context of the establishment of peace in the region.

Sofianopoulos highly evaluated the policy pursued by Armenia in the context of the establishment of peace in the region.

“Greece welcomes and backs the approach of Armenia in the process of establishing peace, as it is based on the international law, on the jurisdiction and is implemented in a diplomatic way. We support Armenia in any way in establishing peace,” the Greek ambassador underscored.
