Diversification is what is needed in all spheres for a country that wants to secure its independence, in the economic, defense, and political spheres. French Ambassador to Armenia Olivier Decottignies stated this in an interview to the Public Television of Armenia—and addressing the question of to what extent the diversification of Armenia's economy is possible, taking into account that Armenian products are mainly exported to Russia, and whether these products can be exported to Europe.

"There is a French expression: there is no need to put all the eggs in one basket. I think that this is the concern of the Armenian authorities today. We, the French, are ready to assist Armenia on this path. Specifically today, the largest water supplier in Armenia is a French company, (…), the largest cumulative pension fund in Armenia is a French company (…).

So, we have started the assistance process, which means we can already do something. Yes, we can do more. What does that imply? It implies that Armenia has a favorable business environment, it implies a fight against monopolies, corruption, favorable conditions for foreign enterprises that are locating in Armenia.

(…). Armenia should make efforts to improve the business environment, and there is a will on the part of the Europeans to get engaged in this work. The will of the French side is obvious," said the French ambassador to Armenia.

And to the question as to what extent Armenia's relations with Russia, within the EAEU and CSTO framework, are obstructing Armenia’s European integration, Decottignies responded: "Today, Russia cannot be associated with Europe at a time when Russia is the main threat to Europe's security. You, as Armenia, are in a regional environment when Armenia is surrounded by such regional superpowers as Russia, Turkey, and Iran. You need to be able to operate in that regional environment while developing your connections with countries further afield: EU countries, France, India. I don't think there's a fundamental contradiction, there's no need to make one main choice, but there's an opportunity to make multiple choices on certain issues, according to your interests. We are here to respond pragmatically to your needs, and we have already demonstrated this in the military sector. That did not prevent Armenia from not leaving the CSTO."
