Belgium's prime minister has officially resigned after a visit to the king after his Flemish Liberals and Democrats (Open VLD) party suffered a heavy defeat in Sunday's election, The Guardian reports. The king accepted the resignation of Alexander De Croo.

He will remain interim prime minister until a new coalition of seven parties is formed, a process that could take months.
