Damascus agreed to sign the protocol on admission of observers from the Arab League. Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Muallem sent the corresponding letter to Secretary General of the Arab League Nabil Elaraby.

According to the Egyptian MENA agency, Deputy Foreign Minister of Syria Faisal-Mekdad will sign the protocol.

The decision was made immediately before the Thursday meeting of the Arab League in Cairo, reports RIA Novosti.

Arab ministers are discussing the situation in Syria and the possibility of imposing economic and political sanctions against the regime of Bashar al-Assad, says Al-Jazeera.

Before sending observers to Syria, the Arab League called on Damascus to sign a special protocol for them to work in Syrian territory. Damascus has made its own amendments to the protocol but the League rejected them.
