Azerbaijan and Armenia can complete the work on the text of the peace treaty within a few months. Azerbaijani president Ilham Aliyev announced this while accepting the credentials of the new Canadian ambassador to his country, Kevin Hamilton, reports TASS.

Aliyev noted that there was an agreement on the main principles of the Madrid principles, the plan of the mediators of the OSCE Minsk Group.

"They had to be initialed, and then the text was to be drawn up. We believe it can be an option: to agree on the fundamental principles, initial them, and then work on the text [of the peace treaty]," Aliyev said.

But the Azerbaijani president emphasized that this peace treaty can be signed only if Armenia changes its constitution "because it contains territorial claims against Azerbaijan." He added that this peace treaty will not be signed until the aforesaid change takes place.

Aliyev had made statements earlier as well about the possibility of preparing the text of the peace treaty. The last time it was voiced a few days before Azerbaijan’s military aggression against Armenia in September 2022.
