Constitution Day is celebrated in Armenia on July 5. The country’s mother law is already 29 years old, and today is a non-working day in Armenia.

On this day in 1995, the country's Constitution was submitted to a people’s referendum. The opposition at that time considered the results of the referendum rigged, but according to official data, the Constitution was adopted. It was the first Constitution of independent Armenia.

Ten years later, on November 27, 2005, the country again held a constitutional referendum, during which the citizens approved the amendments in the main law of Armenia. These amendments expanded the powers of the country’s parliament. At the call of the opposition of the time, most of the society boycotted the referendum on constitutional amendments, but the referendum was officially considered held and those amendments were adopted.

The Constitution of Armenia was amended in 2015 also. In particular, on December 6, 2015, a referendum on constitutional amendments was held, according to which Armenia transitioned to a parliamentary system of governance. Accordingly, there will no longer be presidential elections in the country by people’s vote. After passing parliamentary system of governance, the president of Armenia was elected by the National Assembly and the institute of electors formed as a result of the 2017 parliamentary elections.

According to the first and second articles of the Constitution of Armenia, the country is a sovereign, democratic, social and legal state, and the power in Armenia belongs to its people.
