Turkey hopes to resume the grain deal and renegotiate it in Istanbul, where it was originally signed in July 2022. Turkish leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan said this at a press conference in Washington following the NATO summit.

"We talked about the Black Sea grain initiative with Mr. [Russian President Vladimir] Putin. We will follow the process. If we can bring both sides [Russia and Ukraine] together on this issue, hopefully we will take steps to [resume] the Black Sea initiative. We expect that we will be able to finalize this process in Istanbul at the Dolmabahce Palace. This is our expectation," Erdogan said.

The grain deal, signed in Istanbul on July 22, 2022, expired on July 17, 2023. The Russian president has repeatedly pointed out that the West was exporting most of the Ukrainian grain to its own states, and the main goal of the deal - supplying grain to needy countries, including African countries - was never realized.
