The US has announced significant progress in the negotiations between Armenia and Azerbaijan on a peace treaty. US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said this at a briefing on Monday, adding that Washington continues to urge the sides to sign a peace agreement.

"A peace agreement between the two countries would be of great importance to them and to peace, stability and security in the region. We believe that reaching an agreement is possible, but it requires both sides to make difficult decisions and serious compromises," Miller said.

He also noted that the sides had made progress during recent talks in Washington, but the State Department spokesman declined to provide details.

According to him, Washington will continue to promote a final agreement and the settlement of differences.

"An agreement has not yet been reached, and we are not going to stop until there is one," Miller concluded.
