Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina has resigned due to the riots and left the country, News18 television reported on X.

Hasina has resigned. She could leave the country and go to Finland, it is said in the post.

Before that, it was reported that Hasina and her sister had left the Ganabhaban Palace, the official residence of the Prime Minister of Bangladesh, and gone to a safer place. Thousands of protesters have stormed the PM’s residence.

The information about Sheikh Hasina's resignation was confirmed by Reuters sources in the Bangladesh army.

The premier left for the Indian city of Agartala, News18 added.

The Chief of General Staff of Bangladesh Army, Waker-Uz-Zaman, announced that an interim government will be formed in the country.

Mass demonstrations against the quota system for public positions have been going on in Bangladesh for several weeks, and they intensified Sunday after the Student Movement against Discrimination organization announced a multi-day strike against the authorities. The ensuing clashes between students and supporters of the government turned into riots, during which about 300 people died.
