TBILISI. – Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili repeated his statement on United Caucasus at the joint conference with his Armenian counterpart Serzh Sargsyan. Its meaning is incomprehensible, Georgian expert on Caucasus Mamuka Areshidze told Medianews agency.

“I do not comprehend the meaning of such a statement at such a meeting, as the issue is not ready yet. I really do not get what Saakashvili means when talking about united Caucasus. The issue is not realistic now,” the expert said and stressed at the same time that it is not possible to establish united Caucasus when two of its states (Armenia and Azerbaijan) are on the threshold of war.

Areshidze is surprised also by Saakahsvili’s another statement that Armenia showed great moral support during the Russian-Georgian war in 2008.

“The President may possibly be trying to say that Armenia tried to control the actions of Russian bases in its territory during the war,” he stated. 

The unity of the Caucasus, as well as establishment of united economic field and political cooperation is within the interests of all Caucasus states, Georgian President stated at the joint conference with his Armenian counterpart Serzh Sargsyan on Tuesday.

Sargsyan started two days’ official visit to Tbilisi on Tuesday.
