I don't see the possibility of the return of Nagorno-Karabakh Armenians, and we cannot promise people what we cannot guarantee. This was stated by Michael Roth, Chairman of the Committee on Foreign Affairs of the Bundestag—the German parliament, during a press conference in Yerevan Thursday.

The German MP said this situation was one of the tragic chapters in the history of the Armenian people, when the ethnic cleansing and forced deportation of Armenians from Nagorno-Karabakh began.

He noted that this caused suffering both to people in Armenia and to the Armenian residents of Nagorno-Karabakh.

"Azerbaijan denies this, but we have not forgotten those terrible events, and we in Germany, as friends of Armenia, will strive to contribute to the achievement of stable peace in the region. Like last year, I visited the refugees from Nagorno-Karabakh; we assist them," Roth added.

The German lawmaker stressed that Armenia is surrounded by difficult neighbors, and this is a big challenge for it.

"The most difficult and aggressive neighbor of Armenia is Azerbaijan. We understand that it is difficult to sit at the negotiating table with Azerbaijan after the insults to the country [i.e. Armenia], but Germany will try to support Armenia, emphasizing the importance of peace for the region, which should be based on the peace treaty, which has the binding force of ensuring the territorial integrity of Armenia," emphasized Roth.

The German legislator expressed hope that Azerbaijan will show flexibility to create contractual bases for peace and stability in the region.

At the same time, however, he condemned the capture of Armenians by Azerbaijan.

"I have repeatedly advocated the release of the Armenian hostages and stated that this should happen as soon as possible," concluded Michael Roth.
