From November 10, a new IT-system, the EES (Entry-Exit System), will start operating in the European Union (EU). The procedure for entering EU countries for Ukrainian citizens will change. The new system will automatically record the entry and exit of all foreigners to the countries of the Schengen zone.

This system is being introduced to simplify border crossings, increase security through biometric documents, and prevent the use of forged documents. This shall also help combat illegal migration.

This system will record fingerprints and facial photos of people who cross the Schengen zone border once and store them for three years; no more stamps will be needed in the passport.

Registration will take place automatically through self-service terminals.

Therefore, when a person goes abroad, the Schengen zone border guards will first take his biometric data. And if the person refuses to provide it, he will be denied entry.

Then, at each subsequent Schengen zone border crossing, you must scan your passport at the self-service terminal. The Ukrainian government added, however, that the new rules for crossing the Schengen zone border do not mean the lifting of the visa-free regime.
