The trade is increasing and the infrastructure on the Armenian-Georgian border and on the Georgian-Russian border should be continuously increased. Economy minister Gevorg Papoyan stated this while speaking with reporters after the cabinet session of the Armenian government Thursday—and referring to the buildup of trucks on the aforesaid borders.
To the question whether Armenia has an alternative to the Upper Lars motorway which runs along the Georgian-Russian border checkpoint, he responded: "There is certainly an alternative to Lars. The ferry is an alternative to Lars. Now it does not work because it is not needed. Why should [it] work, we spend money pointlessly? If we want and there is a need, we will launch [it] again. If necessary, we will sign a new contract, lease, and operate [ferries]. At that time it was useful, the [Armenian] government assisted businesses and gave that opportunity. But then it became inexpedient because the capacity of Lars increased."
