At least 11 people were killed as a result of a gang attack in the Haitian town of Pont-Sonde, which is located some 100 kilometers north of the capital, Port-au-Prince. And dozens of civilians were injured.

The incident took place early Thursday morning, the local Le Nouvelliste newspaper reported.

Bandits attacked the town, set several buildings on fire, and started an exchange of fire.

Hundreds of residents of Pont-Sonde had to leave the town.

Haiti is facing a major security crisis following the assassination of President Jovenel Moise in 2021 and a devastating earthquake there.

Despite local law enforcement being assisted by a Kenyan-led multinational mission to restore order, criminal gangs control much of Haiti, particularly up to 80 percent of the capital.
