The leader of the military wing of the Palestinian group Hamas in Lebanon has been killed in a rare Israeli airstrike near Tripoli, Lebanon's northernmost city, CNN reports. 

In a joint statement, the Israel Defense Forces and Israel's Shin Bet intelligence agency said they killed Sayyed Atallah Ali, “a senior member of Hamas' military wing in Lebanon,” who they claimed “carried out terrorist attacks against Israeli targets and recruited Hamas fighters in Lebanon.”  Lebanon's second largest city, Tripoli, is not believed to have been attacked since the 2006 conflict between Hezbollah and Israel. Israeli strikes have mainly targeted the south of the country and Lebanese movement strongholds in southern Beirut. Hamas confirmed the death of Atallah Ali, whom it described as the leader of the Lebanese branch of its military wing, the Al-Qassam Brigades.

The organization said in a statement that Atallah Ali was killed in a “treacherous Zionist bombing that targeted his home in the Beddawi refugee camp near Tripoli”. Ali's wife and two daughters were also killed in the blast, the statement said.
