The CIS summit narrowly discussed the earliest possible peaceful settlement in the South Caucasus between Azerbaijan and Armenia. This was stated to journalists by CIS Secretary General Sergei Lebedev, BelTA informs. 

The heads of state expect the settlement process to be finalized in the near future.

Journalists asked Sergei Lebedev whether Armenia had any reservations when signing the documents. “Almost all the documents that were proposed for signing at the meeting of the Council of Heads of State, as far as I know, the Armenian side approved. Moreover, I can say that in a narrow format such a substantive conversation was held on the issues of early peaceful settlement in the South Caucasus. I would like to emphasize: all the CIS heads of state wished the President of Azerbaijan and the Prime Minister of Armenia to come to a mutual agreement as soon as possible,” the CIS Secretary General said. - Wishes are understandable. But I was pleased to see that the leaders of both states themselves also expressed, in my opinion, quite optimistic forecasts that the peace treaty will not be long in coming”.

“No one, of course, has named specific dates. You understand that this is a complicated matter. But nevertheless, everyone present at the meeting expressed hope that this process will be finalized in the near future,” Sergei Lebedev said.

According to him, the signing of such a treaty would significantly improve the situation in the South Caucasus and contribute to the intensification of economic cooperation and interaction within the framework of transport corridors.
