Russia could attack NATO by the year 2030, said Bruno Kahl, the head of Germany’s foreign intelligence service, or BND.

"The Russian armed forces need to be ready to strike NATO no later than the end of this decade," Kahl said during a hearing at Germany's parliamentary oversight committee Monday.

According to Kahl, the Kremlin views Germany as an adversary because Berlin is the second largest supporter of Kyiv.

Also, Kahl emphasized that the probability of applying the clause on mutual defense by NATO will remain high in the coming years.

Russian President Vladimir Putin seeks not only to expand the Kremlin's influence in Europe, but also to dislodge the US military presence from the continent, as the US defense spending far exceeds that of the European Union, the German intelligence chief added. "We are in direct confrontation with Russia."

Kahl added that Putin's goal is not only to take over Ukraine, but "he actually seeks to create a new world order."
