Hungary's ambassador to Iran has been summoned to the country's Foreign Ministry to protest new EU sanctions imposed on some Iranian individuals and entities, Mehr reported.

The Hungarian ambassador to Tehran, whose country holds the presidency of the European Union (EU), was summoned by the Islamic Republic of Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister for Political Affairs to express Iran's strong protest against the European Union's recent decision to impose sanctions against Iran.

“Resorting to illegal and coercive methods such as sanctions against the Islamic Republic of Iran is unacceptable in any case and will lead to nothing,” the Iranian Foreign Ministry said.

It also stressed that Iran's defense and military cooperation with other countries is legally aimed at protecting Iran's interests and national security and it is not a matter in which third parties can interfere.

Addressing the Hungarian Ambassador, Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister for Political Affairs noted that the European Union's action in imposing sanctions on Iranian passenger airlines is a gross violation of international laws and regulations, especially basic human rights and freedoms, and contradicts European human rights requirements. During the meeting, the European Union representative was advised “not to fall into the trap set by the Zionist apartheid regime.”

For his part, the Hungarian Ambassador in Tehran said that he would convey Iran's formal protest to his respective government.
