Kazakhstan will refrain from applying for BRICS membership for now, although the country's president, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, has received such proposals. Berik Uali, Advisor and Press Secretary of the Kazakh President, told this to TengriNews.

"At present and likely in the foreseeable future, Kazakhstan will refrain from applying for BRICS membership, taking into account the multi-step process involved in considering membership, as well as other factors related to the organization's development prospects," Uali said.

According to him, the proposals for BRICS membership were considered by the head of state from the point of view of “Kazakhstan's national interests." But for now, Tokayev gives priority to the UN as a " universal and irreplaceable organization where all current international issues, including the construction of a just world order, can and should be discussed," he added.

“The President has already expressed regret over the UN Security Council's inability to make important and fateful decisions. Therefore, he believes it is necessary to begin reforming the Security Council based on extensive consultations among UN member states, taking into account the interests of "middle powers," Uali noted.

As for BRICS, "Kazakhstan is closely monitoring the evolution of BRICS" and is preparing to participate in the summit of this alliance in Russia, where President Tokayev  “plans to deliver a speech at the extended session of the organization on October 24 in the outreach format,” the topic of which will be cooperation with the countries of the Global South.
