The term of validity of an Armenian-American agreement will be extended for seven more years, the National Assembly (NA) of Armenia informs Armenian News-NEWS.am.

On July 24, 2000 the Agreement between the Government of the Republic of Armenia and U.S. Government to counter the spread of weapons of mass destruction, as well as the spread of technologies, materials, knowledge and experience directly related to such weapons, to prevent the unauthorized transfer, transit, transportation of nuclear, biological and chemical weapons, as well as raw materials directly related to such weapons was signed. The Agreement was signed for seven years, and its validity term had been extended twice.

Armenian Deputy Minister of Defense Arman Sargsyan stated this at Thursday’s meeting of the NA Standing Committee on Defense and Security. The draft law on Ratifying the consent on Extending the Validity Period of the Agreement on Cooperation in Countering the Spread of Weapons of Mass Destruction between the Government of the Republic of Armenia and U.S. Government was debated on in the first reading.

On May 2 of this year, the consent on extending the validity period of the Agreement for another seven years—until November 30, 2030—was signed in Yerevan.

Presenting in detail the procedure and conditions being established and designed by the Agreement, the key rapporteur, Deputy Chair of the NA Standing Committee on Defense and Security, Armen Khachatryan, proposed the MP to vote for the aforesaid draft, underscoring that there are no problematic items in it.

Subsequently, the draft was endorsed.
