Armenia and Azerbaijan have not yet discussed which section of their border will be the next phase of border delimitation. Deputy Prime Minister Mher Grigoryan, who is also chairman of the Armenian commission for border delimitation with Azerbaijan, stated this at Monday’s meeting of the Standing Committee on Foreign Relations of the National Assembly (NA) of Armenia.

"At the moment, we have not yet discussed in which section the next section of the border delimitation will be. One thing is clear that it should be by consensus. None of the parties will come and say, ‘Let's continue in this section, unlike Tavush [Province of Armenia], that section was the most complicated.’ In the end, after long discussions, a consensus was reached to start the process in the most complicated section," added Grigoryan.

Speaking about border delimitation in the Tavush section, the Armenian deputy PM said that there were grounds for conducting border delimitation there.

"The map of the [USSR] General Staff of 1976 is not only a map document, but also a complete summary of the foundations, the legal chain is built," he said.

 According to Mher Grigoryan, there were completely valid grounds for border delimitation.

"It does not refer [to the fact] that sectoral border delimitation should be done, border delimitation work should be done, but it is clearly written in the regulation: at the end of signing a [peace] treaty, a joint protocol-description should be attached to the treaty, which describes the entire border of Armenia and Azerbaijan. I do not rule out [that] there are risks that the process will be interrupted or not completed, but there is no risk that a section will be legally formulated as a border, and then a treaty will not be signed and it will not be absorbed," said the Armenian deputy premier.

As reported earlier, the matter of ratifying the regulation on the joint activities of the commissions on delimitation of the state border between Armenia and Azerbaijan is being debated on at the meeting of the aforesaid NA committee of Armenia.
