Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on Thursday he will lead his Liberal Party in the next election despite growing dissatisfaction among some lawmakers with his performance, Reuters reported.

The election is due by the end of October 2025, and polls show the Liberals will lose heavily to Pierre Poilievre's official opposition Conservatives.

“We're going to continue to have active conversations about how best to defeat Pierre Poilievre in the next election, but that will happen when I'm leader in the next election,” Trudeau told reporters.

“We've always had very good conversations within the Liberal Party. We're a big organization and there have always been different opinions within that organization,” Trudeau said.

Earlier, MPs from the ruling Liberal Party gave Trudeau a vote of confidence.

According to CBC radio sources, a petition demanding that Trudeau step down as party leader was signed by only 24 MPs out of 153 representing the Liberal Party of Canada in the national parliament.

Trudeau and the Liberal Party of Canada have begun to lose the support of fellow Canadians since 2023 amid continuing price increases and rising living standards. According to the latest CBC TV poll, the Prime Minister's personal rating is now 23.1%, while the rating of the leader of the opposition Conservative Party of Canada Pierre Poilievre is 42.6%.
