After the decision to withdraw the Russian border guard forces from the Agarak checkpoint, no change or revision of the Armenian-Russian agreement on the status of the Russian border guard troops is planned, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) Armenia informed in response to the inquiry by the RFE/RL Armenian service.

The agreement reached on the participation of the border guard troops of the National Security Service of Armenia in the protection of the Armenia-Iran and Armenia-Turkey state borders, and the service at the checkpoint of the Armenia-Iran state border will be carried out entirely by the forces of the border guard troops of the National Security Service of Armenia, does not provide for a change or revision of the agreement, the Armenian MFA said in response.

After a half-hour meeting between Armenian PM Nikol Pashinyan and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow in early October, Yerevan informed that according to the agreement reached, the Russian border guards in Armenia will leave the Agarak checkpoint on the border with Iran, and only Armenian border guards will carry out service there ass of January 1. Meanwhile, Article 6 of the Armenian-Russian agreement signed in 1992 states: "The border guard troops of Russia carry out the release of people, vehicles, cargo, goods, and other things through the existing crossing points on the border of Armenia with Turkey and Iran."

But according to the new agreement reached between Yerevan and Moscow, Article 6 of the aforesaid agreement effectively ceases to be in force. And the RFE/RL Armenian service had asked the MFA of Armenia whether this 32-year-old agreement would be revised.
