There is a preliminary agreement that as of January 1, 2025, the full border service at the Agarak border checkpoint will be carried out by the border guard forces of Armenia, and discussions are currently taking place regarding the joint Armenian-Iranian border service. Armen Abazyan, Director of the National Security Service (NSS) of Armenia, informed about this to reporters at the National Assembly (NA) Monday.

When asked whether the Russian border guards will leave the Agarak checkpoint on the border with Iran, Abazyan responded: "There is no such decision yet."

As for whether the Armenian side is capable of carrying out border service on the Armenian-Iranian and Armenian-Turkish borders on its own, the NSS director said: "Yes, in a phased version. But there is no such decision at the moment."

He spoke also about Armenia’s territories that are currently occupied by the Azerbaijani armed forces, and noted: "You know that a process of border delimitation is taking place [between Armenia and Azerbaijan], the regulation of the border delimitation commissions [of the two countries] was signed recently, it was ratified by the NA [of Armenia], and in Azerbaijan—by the president of that country. That process will be continuous."

Armen Abazyan added that in his opinion, as a result of this process, Azerbaijan will withdraw from the territories it has occupied in Armenia.
