Gas export to Armenia is economically unreasonable for Azerbaijan. This was stated by energy security expert, international expert Armen Manvelyan during the seminar on “Energy Processes: Region”.

According to him, Azerbaijan has no extra gas volumes to export to additional markets. Moreover, it has a problem to increase export of blue fuel to those markets where they already supply gas (Turkey and the European Union).

He said that Azerbaijan exported 22 billion cubic meters of gas out of 30 billion cubic meters, the remaining volumes are consumed in the domestic market, and about 1 billion cubic meters more is imported from Russia.

Manvelyan explained that against this background they should also double their export capacity.

The expert emphasized that oil production in Azerbaijan has fallen by 40% in recent years, so Baku directs part of the gas also to increase these capacities.

He explained that Azerbaijan sells gas to Turkey for about $290 per cubic meter, while Armenia receives Russian gas at the border for $165 per cubic meter.

Talking to Armenian News-NEWS.am, the expert also added that Armenia is also unlikely to be of interest to Azerbaijan as a gas transit, as it again does not have the necessary capacities to export to additional markets.
