A spokesman for the European Commission has confirmed that EC President Ursula von der Leyen will not attend the COP29 climate summit in Azerbaijan, after UN sources told Euronews that the presidents of France and Russia will not go, Euronews reports.

Earlier, Euronews also reported that Russian President Vladimir Putin and French President Emmanuel Macron would also not attend, citing sources close to the UN.

“The chair will not attend this year's COP,” a European Commission spokesperson said, adding that as the EC is in transition, ”the chair will focus on his institutional responsibilities.”

According to Euronews sources, more than 100 heads of state and government have already confirmed their presence in Azerbaijan. From Europe, the leaders of the Czech Republic, Germany, Greece, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Poland and Spain have announced their participation.
