In the case when 150 thousand Armenians lived in Artsakh before the 2020 war, now only 13 Armenians remain there. Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh) ombudsman Gegham Stepanyan stated this at the conference Thursday on Azerbaijan's aggression against human rights and environmental protection.

"That's what one needs to know about Azerbaijan and the human rights agenda. All principles of human rights remain on paper and are not taken into account when making this or that political decision," Stepanyan added.

He noted that the lack of international sanctions against Azerbaijan and the disregard of its crimes have led to the ethnic cleansing of Artsakh Armenians.

In his assessment, there was no "Greta [Thunberg] effect" in the case of Artsakh from the point of view that Azerbaijan was even encouraged in its crimes, as evidenced by the holding of the COP29 climate conference in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, after its ethnic cleansing of Artsakh.

"This is nothing but disregard of crimes, this is encouragement. The [Azerbaijani] blockade of Lachin Corridor is one of the elements of ethnic cleansing. It is surprising that the world community turned a blind eye to the fact that the [Armenian] people of Artsakh were hungry—including children and the disabled. Even in the case of the ICRC, we had to ask them to issue a statement. It means that something is wrong in the domain of human rights," Stepanyan emphasized.

To note, well-known Swedish eco-activist Greta Thunberg also participated in this conference.
