President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev is offended by the European Union (EU) because of Armenia.

"A NATO infrastructure has been created, under the name of ‘EU monitors,’ on the border of Azerbaijan and Armenia," Aliyev said in an interview for the All-Russia State Television and Radio Broadcasting Company and Russia’s RIA Novosti news agency.

"A NATO infrastructure, under the guise of so-called ‘European monitors,’ was created on the Armenian side, at the border with us," the Azerbaijani president said, RIA Novosti reports.

According to Aliyev, the matter of sending EU monitors was agreed with Azerbaijan during the quadrilateral meeting in 2022 between him, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, then European Council President Charles Michel, and French President Emmanuel Macron.

"At that time, we had not yet excluded France from the settlement process. And it was agreed that a limited contingent of European Union representatives would be deployed for two months. After that, the mission was extended without our [i.e. Azerbaijan’s] consent. And the argument [of the EU] was as follows: ‘Why agree with you? This is a mission in the territory of Armenia?’ Our argument was as follows: ‘Why did you agree it with us when we were making an agreement? It can't be like that,’" Aliyev said.

The president of Azerbaijan noted that, subsequently, the number of these EU monitors in Armenia was increased to more than 200 people.

"Furthermore, this mission smoothly turned into a NATO mission, as the representatives of Canada were engaged [as well]," Aliyev added.

To note, it remains unclear what grievances the Azerbaijani president has with NATO, considering that in the same interview, Aliyev boasts of cooperation with NATO member Turkey.
