Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei said Tehran has not established any direct ties with the ruling groups in Syria since the fall of Bashar al-Assad's government in early December, IRNA․ reported.

Baghaei added that Iran had been in touch with Syrian opposition groups for a long time before the fall of Assad's government.

He said the Islamic Republic told the groups that its presence in Syria was aimed at preventing the advancement of ISIS group and the spread of terrorism in regional countries.

Baghaei said Iran uses multilateral meetings to discuss various issues, adding that the issue of Syria was on the agenda of talks between Iran and Turkey.

Iran's position is to preserve Syria's sovereignty and integrity and help the Syrian people determine their destiny without foreign interference, he said, adding that it is important for Syria not to become a safe haven for terrorists.

The spokesman emphasized that all parties involved in the situation in Syria tell their own stories. Meanwhile, Iran believes that all regional states should be careful not to normalize the Israeli regime's psychological warfare, which it said is aimed at creating tension in the region.

He went on to emphasize that Iran will act decisively to defend itself in the region.

Baghaei said that the US military is stationed in Syria, adding that this could disrupt the process of maintaining the integrity and national sovereignty of the Arab country.
