Over time, the countries of the South Caucasus will independently solve regional problems. Russian foreign minister Sergey Lavrov told this to a press conference Tuesday—and commenting on the relevance of the 3+3 format, which includes Russia, Armenia, Iran, Azerbaijan, Turkey and Georgia, but the latter does not participate in its meetings.

According to Lavrov, this format is the most effective one for resolving issues in the region. He stated that the US and EU's attempts to interfere in the negotiation process between Armenia and Azerbaijan only complicate it.

"When countries that are far from our territories, traditions, and history announce that they will provide security in Syunik Province [of Armenia], it raises questions. For example, I don't quite understand how the European Union [monitoring] mission [in Armenia] can perform such a task," said the Russian FM.

Also, he pointed to the efforts of the EU and the US to show their participation in the process of signing a peace treaty between Armenia and Azerbaijan.

"Even now I have heard as well that allegedly Azerbaijan and Armenia have practically agreed on a peace treaty. And it is clear that there are two remaining questions; it is difficult to avoid them. And this is where the European Commission, the European Union start talking that ‘We will come now, help you.’ It is the sovereign decision of Azerbaijan, Armenia where they will sign the document when it is agreed. But the desire of Brussels and Washington is also to somehow show that they did everything. There are sayings like this, they are not very decent, but everywhere you want to show that you are the master" said the Russian FM.
