The cooperation agreement signed between Armenia and the US, as well as the ambitious plans of the US president-elected to expand the influence of his country, prove that Donald Trump can become one of the most serious opponents of Russia. Viktor Sobolev, a member of the Russian State Duma Committee on Defense, expressed such a view.

Sobolev called this situation extremely dangerous for Russia's interests in the South Caucasus, saying that such agreements contradict Moscow's geopolitical interests.

"Certainly, it threatens Russia's interests in Transcaucasia. After all, Trump is now in power in the US, not Biden, who is constantly falling. He [i.e. Trump] is a man who wants to enlarge America—and we have absolutely no need for this enlargement. The fact that he has entered Armenia is the first signal that he will definitely be our [i.e. Russia’s] enemy—and probably the most serious one.

Of course, there are risks that Armenia will become anti-Russian if they have already signed such an agreement. (…).Of course, NATO bases will be stationed in Armenia, while our [i.e. Russia’s] troops will be withdrawn from there. Our military bases [in Armenia] are located in Gyumri and Yerevan. This is very serious. The entire southern direction should be strengthened," the Russian lawmaker told НСН—the Russian National News Service.
