The EU membership process is the will of the people of Armenia, and we will discuss that will in the National Assembly of Armenia, we will make a decision, after that it will be clear what to do. Armenian National Assembly (NA) speaker Alen Simonyan told this to reporter in the NA Tuesday—and referring to the statements being made by the Russian side that Armenia should make a choice between the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) and the European Union (EU).

"But I don't think that the Russian side should have such big concerns about it, and I don't think that combining cooperation can be a problem in any way. If it is a problem for them, I think that there is no such problem that the Armenian and the Russian parties cannot discuss with each other. We can discuss, find solutions, but Armenia is a sovereign state and decides what law to adopt, what is in its interests, and what is not in its interests," added Simonyan.

And to the question whether voting in favor of Armenia’s EU membership process in the NA can be considered the first step on the road to the country’s  EU accession, he responded as follows: "First, who said we're going to vote in favor [of it]? We're coming from the wrong side. What Russia is losing in our region in terms of Armenia is because of Russia's steps and because of Russia leaving us [i.e. Armenia] alone in the region and leaving the region. Blaming Armenia that Armenia is trying to ensure its security, its existence... it cannot be wrong. I don't think this is the first step; this is one of the steps."
