It is difficult, frankly, to predict now what policy the new administration of [US President Donald] Trump will build regarding the South Caucasus. Maria Zakharova, the spokesperson of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA), stated this at Thursday’s press briefing.

“The track record of past years shows that attempts by extra-regional actors—among which are primarily the United States of America and the European Union—to intervene in the affairs of the region have not led to anything good.

We [i.e. Russia] have repeatedly reiterated that the real roadmap for reconciliation and a stable, lasting, sustainable peace between Baku and Yerevan is reflected in a series of trilateral statements by the leaders of Russia, Azerbaijan and Armenia, which were signed in 2020-2022.

We support direct dialogue between Baku and Yerevan, and are always ready to provide the necessary assistance to Azerbaijani and Armenian partners in all ways of settlement: development of a balanced peace treaty, unblocking of transport and economic ties, delimitation and demarcation of borders, and development of contacts within civil society. Consolidation of the process within such a regional paradigm is important for achieving sustainable peace and prosperity," said the Russian MFA spokesperson.
