The National Assembly (NA) Standing Committee on European Integration on Friday is debating on the draft law "On starting the process of the Republic of Armenia's membership in the European Union."

This bill was earlier approved by the Armenian government.

The Division of State and Legal Expertise of the Expertise and Analytical Department of the NA, however, has expressed a negative view on this law initiative. In its view, errors were made in its numerous legal wording, and it will be impossible to hold a referendum in Armenia on European Union (EU) membership with the submitted draft law because the EU is an international organization.

The procedure for membership is established by the constitution of Armenia and Article 15 of the Law "On International Treaties."

And as a result of expert analysis, it was recorded that the wording provided for by this bill is not unambiguously perceived and gives rise to different interpretations.
