Since February 1, 2025, the European Commission has had a Directorate General for Enlargement and Eastern Neighborhood (DG ENEST) in charge of enlargement and accession negotiations with candidate countries and potential candidates for accession to the European Union.

According to the European Commission's press office, this also includes communication on the benefits of enlargement in EU Member States as well as in the enlargement partners. Regional cooperation and regional initiatives, including the gradual integration of candidate countries as they work towards accession to the Union.

The Directorate General will manage most of the EU's financial and technical assistance to the enlargement partners, as well as to the EU Eastern Neighborhood countries such as Armenia, Azerbaijan and Belarus. In addition, the Directorate General will provide continued and sustained support to Ukraine and will continue to work on Ukraine's recovery and reconstruction.
