US President Donald Trump is expected to sign a presidential memorandum to renew his “maximum pressure” campaign against Iran aimed at preventing the country from obtaining nuclear weapons and reducing oil exports to zero, Reuters reported, citing a US official.

The official told Reuters that Trump's directive instructs the U.S. Treasury Secretary to apply “maximum economic pressure” on Iran, including sanctions and enforcement mechanisms to violate existing sanctions.

The official said that as part of the effort to maximize pressure, the Trump administration will conduct a campaign “aimed at bringing Iranian oil exports to zero.”

The US post president to the UN will work with key allies to “finalize the lifting of international sanctions and restrictions on Iran,” the source said.

Trump's maximum pressure campaign in his first term in office was aimed at using tough sanctions to strangle Iran's economy. The Biden administration has not significantly eased the sanctions imposed by Trump, but there is debate over how vigorously they have been applied.
