A plane with 10 people on board has gone missing in Alaska, reports VOA. The plane went missing on Thursday while flying over Alaska's Norton Sound, a bay just south of the Arctic Circle.

Rescuers continued their search late into the night. The Bering Air plane was flying from Unalakleet to Nome, the Alaska Department of Public Safety said in a statement.

There were nine passengers and one pilot on board. Authorities are trying to determine its last known coordinates.

The Cessna Caravan plane took off from Unalakleet at 2:37pm and lost contact about an hour later, according to Bering Air director of operations David Olson. The US Coast Guard said the plane was 12 miles (19 kilometers) offshore.

Bering Air serves 32 communities in western Alaska from hubs in Nome, Kotzebue, and Unalakleet. The Nome fire department said ground crews were searching the coast from Nome to Topkok.
