Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev has approved an intergovernmental agreement with Russia on cooperation in the development of transit cargo transportation along the North-South corridor. The document was signed in Moscow on December 21, 2024.

The decree approving the agreement was published on the website of the Azerbaijani president. The document says that the implementation of the provisions of the agreement is entrusted to the country's Minister of Digital Development and Transport. The Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry must notify Moscow on the completion of domestic procedures necessary for the project to enter into force. The Russian side has not yet approved the agreement, reports “Kommersant”.

The agreement on the construction of the North-South transport corridor was signed in 2000 between Russia, Iran and India. Later it was joined by Armenia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Belarus, Oman, Turkey, Syria, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan. The transportation corridor runs from St. Petersburg to the Indian city of Mumbai.
