PreferredNot only the Armenian captives, but also Armenia is now being tried in Azerbaijan. This was stated by the second President of Armenia, Robert Kocharyan, during his press conference Monday.
According to him, Azerbaijan will attempt to show with these trials that everything that happened in Nagorno-Karabakh has nothing to do with the self-determination of Nagorno-Karabakh, and that all this was originally organized by Armenia against Azerbaijan.
Kocharyan called this the problem of Armenia, as Azerbaijan wants to put an end to self-determination.
“During the trials, my name and the name of the third president of Armenia appear, but the name of the current prime minister of Armenia does not. This raises questions,” Kocharyan added.
He expressed confidence that it is also in the interests of the Armenian authorities that there is no theatrical performance during these “trials” in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, since they are obligated by their position to protect the interests of the country.
“And what can the [Armenian] opposition do regarding the matter of the return of the captives? The [Armenian] authorities have the appropriate leverage, and they can do something. The fate of these people should be on the negotiating table and raised at every meeting—but this is not happening,” said the second president of Armenia.
He recalled that when Armenia has joined the Rome Statute, and the Armenian authorities announced that they would then initiate trials against the Azerbaijani president and others for ethnic cleansing of Armenian.
“In the end, it turned out that this was only necessary to prevent the Russian president from coming to Armenia,” Robert Kocharyan concluded.
