US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov have agreed on future cooperation on matters of geopolitical interest, economic and investment opportunities, Reuters reports.

The US and Russian delegations have agreed to “address irritants” to their bilateral relationship and begin working on a plan to end the war in Ukraine, the US State Department said, making it clear that the efforts are still in the early phases, VOA reports.

“One phone call followed by one meeting is not sufficient to establish enduring peace,” US Department of State Spokesperson Tammy Bruce said after the meeting in Saudi Arabia. She added that the US considers this meeting an important step in ending the Ukrainian conflict, but additional steps are needed.

According to her, Russia and the US have agreed that the end of the conflict in Ukraine must be lasting, stable, and acceptable to all parties.
