US President Donald Trump will consider restoring aid to Ukraine if peace talks are held and confidence-building measures are taken, US National Security Advisor Mike Waltz said on Wednesday.
Trump on Monday suspended military aid to Ukraine, his latest move to shift US policy towards a more conciliatory stance towards Russia.
And on Tuesday evening, Trump said he had received a letter from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, expressing the latter’s willingness to sit down at the negotiating table.
Waltz said the letter was a good and positive first step.
The officials have discussed the date, location, and team for talks that he said would end the war.
“We're already talking about confidence-building measures that we'll then take to the Russians and test that side,” Waltz told Fox News.
But he did not specify what those confidence-building measures would be.
Trump had said Tuesday night that Ukraine was ready to sign a mining deal with the US, which Washington says is essential to ensuring continued US assistance to Ukraine.
