No one has given Armenia security guarantees comparable to those in Russian-Armenian relations. This was stated by the Russian ambassador to Armenia Sergey Kopyrkin in an interview with 24NEWS.
According to the Russian diplomat, in any case, he is not aware of any documents or statements indicating this. The ambassador added that the main components of Armenian-Russian bilateral relations in the security sphere are the same: there is a Russian military base, there are Russian border guards with a certain dynamics of their presence, and they continue to serve on the border.
“As far as I understand, this is highly appreciated by Armenia’s leadership,” the Russian ambassador noted.
Referring to the EU monitoring mission in Armenia, Sergey Kopyrkin recalled that Russia has repeatedly expressed its position in this regard.
“We [i.e. Russia] are convinced in the correctness of our position, including based on the experience of relations with Western partners; but this is Armenia’s decision,” he said.
Responding to a question about cooperation in the technico-military sphere, the Russian ambassador said that this topic is on the agenda. According to him, a lot of information has been accumulated in this domain. There is a political will and a desire on the Russian side to preserve what is there. Issues are being discussed, solutions are being sought, the Russian diplomat concluded.
