A bipartisan group of US Congressional lawmakers intends to introduce a bill called the "Azerbaijan Aircraft Engine Export Restrictions Act," which would prohibit the export of engine parts for the aircraft of Azerbaijani president Ilham Aliyev, writes Alex Raufoglu, an American journalist of Azerbaijani origin.

As the journalist notes, citing sources, the objective of these congress members is to have imprisoned Azerbaijani opposition member Gubad Ibadoghlu released.

The bill requires US Secretary of State Marco Rubio to submit a report containing detailed information on the status of Ibadoghlu's detention, US diplomatic efforts aimed at his release, and Azerbaijan's attempts to circumvent export restrictions by third parties to the relevant Congressional committees no later than 30 days after its entry into force.

“... if a foreign company, financial institution, or govt is found to have facilitated the export of GE90-110B1L or GE90-115B engine parts to Azerbaijan, the U.S. shall impose sanctions, including:

  1. Blocking of U.S. financial transactions involving the violating entity
  2. Revocation of U.S. export privileges for the violating entity.
