US President Donald Trump, meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte at the White House, assessed Putin's statement on the ceasefire in Ukraine, Reuters reports.

Trump said Putin “made a very promising statement, but it was incomplete.”

He said he was willing to talk to the Russian president to push for a ceasefire.

“I hope Russia will do the right thing,” the US president said.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said today, March 13, at a press conference after talks with his Belarusian counterpart Alexander Lukashenko that Russia agrees with the proposal to stop hostilities, but it must lead to a long-term peace.

“We agree with the proposals to end hostilities, but we proceed from the fact that this cessation should be one that would lead to long-term peace and eliminate the original causes of this crisis,” Putin said.

He also thanked Trump for his attention to the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
