Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said in a telephone conversation with his Turkish counterpart Hakan Fidan on Monday evening that the events unfolding in Turkey over the arrest of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu are an internal matter that will be properly handled by the authorities of that country, Mehr reported.

The talks between the two diplomats came at a time when Turkey has been gripped by days of unrest and protests over the jailing of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu on corruption charges.

“We are confident that the Turkish authorities will properly manage these events based on the interests of the Turkish nation,” Araghchi said.

The ministers also discussed developments in West Asia, where tensions have escalated again amid renewed Israeli strikes on the Gaza Strip and Lebanon, attacks on Syria, as well as U.S. air attacks in Yemen.

Araghchi condemned Israeli actions against Gaza and Lebanon and called for immediate action by the international community, especially Islamic countries, to stop the “crimes of the occupation regime.”

He also condemned the US airstrikes on Yemen and stressed the importance of cooperation among regional countries to prevent further aggression against Islamic countries and worsening insecurity and instability in the region.
