Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei has agreed to pardon, reduce or commute the sentences of more than 1,500 Iranian prisoners, Mehr reported. 

Ayatollah Khamenei on Wednesday approved a request by Gholam-Hossein Mohseni Ejei, head of the judiciary, to suspend or commute the sentences of prisoners deemed eligible for parole or sentence reductions. The decision came on the eve of the Eid al-Fitr holiday, marking the end of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, as well as the anniversary of the admission of the Islamic Republic.

In a letter to the leader, Mohseni Ejei asked for pardon or commutation of sentences of 1,526 people convicted by general, revolutionary and military courts.

According to Article 110 (11) of Iran's constitution, the supreme leader can pardon or reduce prisoners' sentences on the proposal of the head of the judiciary.

Last month, Ayatollah Khamenei pardoned more than 3,000 convicts on the occasion of Eid al-Adha.
